If you’ve started thinking about senior portraits (which hopefully you have if your High School Junior is becoming a senior this fall!), you’ve probably already realized there are about 47 bazillion different opinions on when to do them. Okay, maybe not 47 bazillion. But close!
Some seniors love the bright, glowy look of summer. Some want cozy fall leaves. Some are all about spring flowers. And some parents are just trying to make sure this gets done before the yearbook deadline sneaks up and ruins everyone’s mood.
The good news? There’s not one “perfect” season for senior portraits. The right time really depends on the look your senior wants, their schedule, and how organized everyone is feeling this year. (No judgment either way.)

Senior Portrait Season Typically Runs from April Through October
Typically, senior portrait season starts when the weather is nice! So that means April and it runs all the way through the end of October. That gives families a pretty solid range of options, but it also means the calendar can fill up faster than people expect, especially once sports, vacations, college visits, and “we’ll figure it out later” starts happening.
So before choosing a season, it’s a really good idea to know when your school’s senior portrait deadline is, whether they require a specific crop or file format, and how much time you’ll need after the session for image selection and delivery.
And one very important thing parents should keep in mind that is often forgotten: Yearbook deadlines! A lot of schools have yearbook image deadlines much earlier than parents expect, especially if you want to submit a custom senior portrait instead of using the school photo.
So yes, technically your senior can wait until later in the season, but if the yearbook deadline is breathing down your neck, that “we still have time” energy disappears pretty quickly.
Here’s a breakdown of the different senior portrait seasons, what each one is best for, and when you should actually book if you want the best shot at your ideal timeframe.

Spring Senior Portraits
Best For:
seniors who want flowers, fresh greenery, and softer colors
families who want to get portraits done early
families who may have missed Senior portrait season last year
seniors with packed summer schedules
anyone trying to stay way ahead of the yearbook deadline
Spring senior sessions have such a fresh, clean feel to them. You’ll usually get blooming trees, softer natural tones, and that “everything is finally alive again” look after a long New England winter. It’s a great option if your senior wants something bright, pretty, and a little more understated than bold summer or peak fall color. Spring is also a smart choice for parents who know life gets chaotic once summer starts.
When to Book Spring Senior Portraits
Spring portraits should be booked now.
If your senior is hoping for an April, May, or early June session, this is the time to get it on the calendar. Spring sessions tend to appeal to families who want to be proactive, and honestly, that’s not a bad move.
Spring portraits are great because they avoid the rush of peak busy season, leaving plenty of time for ordering prints, announcements, or grad gifts. It also reduces the chance of scrambling later, which is less stressful for everyone! Check out Leah’s Spring Portraits!

Summer Senior Portraits
Best For:
seniors who want full greenery and golden evening light
seniors who want to do a beach session
athletes or students with packed fall schedules
families who want flexibility around vacations and activities
seniors who want a relaxed, easygoing session vibe
Summer is one of the most popular times for senior portraits, and for good reason. The days are longer, schedules can be a little more flexible, and the light is honestly chef’s kiss for portraits. Summer sessions are great for seniors who want that warm, glowy, outdoorsy look with lots of color and variety. This is also a really practical time to schedule portraits before the school year starts getting busy again.
When to Book Summer Senior Portraits
Most seniors book summer sessions in April and May.
If your senior wants a session in June, July, or August, it’s a good idea to book in spring before those spots start disappearing. A lot of families wait until summer to start thinking about senior portraits… which is usually the exact moment they realize everyone else already had the same idea. In other words, don’t wait!
Summer works well especially if your senior plays a fall sport or has a heavy academic schedule. For a lot of families, summer ends up being that sweet spot between “not too early” and “not cutting it way too close.” Check out Olivia’s Summer session!

Fall Senior Portraits
Best For:
seniors who love colorful foliage and cozy seasonal tones
families who want that classic New England fall look
seniors who like layered outfits, boots, jackets, and texture
anyone obsessed with autumn (which, to be fair, is a lot of people)
Fall senior portraits are beautiful. Like… obviously. The colors are gorgeous, the weather is usually more comfortable, and the overall look is timeless. If your senior has been picturing warm leaves, golden grass, flannels, boots, or rich earthy tones, fall might absolutely be their season. But here’s the catch: EVERYONE else also wants fall senior portraits! So because it’s the most popular season, it books up the fastest.
When to Book Fall Senior Portraits
As early as possible. That means, before August. If you wait until August to book, you most likely won’t get a date.
If your senior wants a September or October session, booking early is the move. Not “I’ll check back in later.” Not “Maybe once school starts.” Not “We should probably do that soon.” Like actually early. Like booking now might even be your best bet! I’m not even joking.
Fall availability tends to go first. It’s peak busy season. School is back in session. Sports and extracurriculars are in full swing! And yearbook deadlines may already be close. So yes, fall is stunning. But it’s definitely the season where planning ahead matters most. Check out Kerrigan’s Fall session!

So… What’s the Best Season for Senior Portraits?
Honestly? The best season is the one that works best for your senior’s personality, schedule, and style. There’s no wrong answer here.
If your senior wants:
flowers and fresh color = spring
greenery and golden light = summer
cozy leaves and classic New England vibes = fall
The biggest thing isn’t choosing the “best” season. It’s choosing a season early enough that you actually have options. Because the ideal session date doesn’t help much if the calendar is already full.

A Good Rule of Thumb for Parents
If you’re trying to keep things simple, here’s the easiest way to think about it:
Want spring portraits? Book now.
Want summer portraits? Book in April or May.
Want fall portraits? Book as early as humanly possible.
Need yearbook photos? Always check the deadline first.
That’s really the whole game. A little planning now saves a lot of stress later.
Senior portraits are one of those things that somehow feel both way too early and suddenly last-minute at the exact same time. But this season matters. These photos aren’t just about checking off a school requirement. They’re about documenting who your senior is right now. Before graduation, before the next chapter, and before this season of life is gone in the blink-of-an-eye.
So if you’ve been meaning to figure out when to book senior portraits, this is your sign to stop mentally carrying it around on your to-do list.
