High School Senior Photos – The Ultimate Guide

High School Senior Photos aren’t just photos—they’re time capsules of one of the biggest milestones in your child’s life. You blinked… and somehow they’re almost a senior! They’ve swapped juice boxes for coffee runs, cartoons for college applications, and bedtime stories for curfews. And now you’re staring down the final chapter of their childhood—senior year.

It’s bittersweet. It’s exciting. And it’s absolutely worth capturing.

So, When Should You Book a Senior Session?

Short answer? Early. Longer answer? Aim to book your senior’s photo session in the spring or summer before their senior year begins. Why? Photographers book up fast (especially the good ones!), and you’ll want first pick of available session dates, plenty of time for outfit planning, weather wiggles, and choosing the perfect location. Not to mention… yearbook deadlines!

Plus early booking = zero stress. You’ll have those beautiful images ready for grad announcements, party invites, and proud social media humblebrags.

How to Choose the Right Photographer

Choosing the right photographer for your child’s high school senior photos is less about picking the biggest name and more about finding someone whose style feels like you. Start by browsing their portfolio—are the photos bright and airy, moody and artistic, candid and fun? Make sure their vibe matches the look you want. Don’t be afraid to stalk their social media or read reviews to see how they interact with clients (spoiler: a great personality behind the lens makes a huge difference). Ask about their process, turnaround time, and what’s included in their packages. Most importantly, choose someone your senior will feel comfortable with—because when they’re relaxed, their confidence will shine through in every shot.

What to Wear (And What Not to)

High school senior photos is the time to rock your style! This is the moment to show off who you are in your favorite outfits, your go-to look, or even your team uniform. When clients ask what they should wear, I always give the same advice: “Whatever makes you look and feel your very best—and makes you feel like YOU.” How you feel in your clothes will absolutely show up in the photos.

Choose up to three outfits that reflect different sides of your personality. A mix of casual and dressy options works best—and bring a few backups just in case you’re not feeling something on shoot day. Look for pieces that are clean, well-fitted, and wrinkle-free (yes, hangers matter!). Shoes can make the outfit, so don’t overlook them—whether it’s your favorite sneakers, boots, or heels, let them speak to your style.

A few things to avoid: busy prints or neon colors, clothes that don’t fit well or match your skin tone too closely, and overly wrinkled fabrics. The goal is to feel like the best version of yourself—YOU but elevated!

Hair, Makeup, and Prep Tips

Hair and makeup might seem like the finishing touches, but they can seriously elevate your senior portraits. Whether you go pro or DIY, the goal is to look like you—just a little more polished. If you’re doing your own makeup, aim for soft, natural tones that enhance your features without overpowering them. For hair, keep it simple and true to your everyday vibe—nothing too different from your usual look unless you’ve tested it beforehand.

In the days leading up to your shoot, drink lots of water, get good sleep, and avoid trying anything new (we’re looking at you, last-minute facials or at-home hair dye). Don’t forget to trim or clean up your nails—yes, they show in close-ups! If you’re prone to shine, pack some blotting paper or powder. And most importantly? Skip the spray tan. Spray tans just make the skin look orange in camera, so I do not recommend!

Choosing the Right Location

Choosing the right location for your senior portraits sets the entire tone for the shoot—it’s the backdrop to your story. There are so many awesome options to consider! Think about what speaks to you: an urban setting with cool architecture and city vibes? A dreamy field with tall grass and golden light? A flower-filled park, a beach with soft waves, or even a place that’s meaningful to you and your family? Whether you’re drawn to nature, cityscapes, or somewhere in between, we’ll find a spot that fits your vibe perfectly. I’m always happy to suggest locations based on your style and preferences!

Keep in mind that some locations may charge an additional fee or require permits, and a few are seasonal (hello, sunflower fields and cherry blossoms!). It’s a good idea to factor that in when picking your shoot date and location—but don’t stress, I’ve got you covered. I’ll help guide you through all the details so we land on a location that looks amazing and works logistically.

Props, Pets, and Personal Touches

Props, pets, and personal touches are what take your senior session to the next level. I want to know who you are and what makes you unique—your passions, your quirks, your story. Whether it’s playing an instrument, riding horses, painting, fishing, or crushing it on the soccer field, whatever lights you up is worth highlighting. These are the moments and memories that make your portraits feel real and personal.

Yay for props! Are you an artist? A book lover? A skateboard pro or future rockstar? Maybe your dog is your absolute best friend? Bring the things (and furry friends!) that define your personality—I encourage it. Not only do props make your photos more meaningful, but they also help you feel relaxed and natural in front of the camera. Trust me, we’ll find fun, creative ways to incorporate everything that makes you, you.
