“I feel awkward and don’t know how to pose.” I hear it often from seniors before a session. Honestly? Totally normal.
Most high school seniors haven’t had professional photos taken since they were like five, if ever! So of course standing in front of a camera can feel a little awkward at first. Parents sometimes worry their teen will look stiff, or uncomfortable. Seniors usually assume everyone else magically knows how to look natural in photos except them. The good news is that knowing how to pose for senior pictures is not something seniors are expected to show up already knowing. That’s my job.

“What Do I Do With My Hands?” Helping Seniors Feel Comfortable During Senior Pictures
One of the biggest misconceptions about senior sessions is that you need modeling experience to get natural, confident-looking photos. In reality, the best senior portraits usually happen when seniors stop trying to “pose perfectly” and start relaxing into the moment instead. That’s why I guide seniors through the entire session from start to finish. I’m constantly helping with small adjustments throughout the session so nobody is left standing there wondering what to do with their hands or how they’re supposed to smile. Most of the posing during senior pictures is actually very simple and natural. Sometimes it’s just shifting weight slightly, walking slowly, laughing through the awkwardness for a second, or focusing on movement instead of standing completely still.

The Secret Is That Nobody Feels Natural Right Away
Seriously! Almost everyone starts out a little unsure of themselves in front of the camera. Even seniors whose photos end up looking incredibly confident and effortless usually begin the session saying they have no idea how to pose for senior pictures. That’s why the beginning of a session is never about perfection. It’s about easing into things naturally.
Most seniors relax once they realize they’re not expected to magically know what to do the second the camera comes out. And honestly, the more relaxed seniors become, the more natural the photos start feeling. That’s when real smiles start showing up. The real magic happens when personalities come out naturally and the session starts feeling less like “taking photos” and more like just hanging out.

How You Feel in Your Clothes Makes a Difference
Outfits can make a huge difference too. Seniors tend to feel the most confident when they’re wearing something that actually feels like them instead of something they think they’re supposed to wear for photos. Confidence always photographs better than forcing a style that feels uncomfortable.

Choosing the Right Photographer
Choosing the right photographer matters so much! A good senior photographer should know how to create a relaxed environment, guide posing naturally, and help teens feel comfortable enough for genuine expressions and personality to come through.

If your teen is feeling nervous about how to pose for senior pictures, just know they definitely aren’t alone. And more importantly, they don’t have to figure it out by themselves.
